CASL Awards

 

Join us in celebrating the 2008 award winners at the Baci Grill, 134 Berlin Road, Cromwell, CT 06416 from 5 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Fall Festival 2008


Application/nomination forms for all awards are mailed with the February CASLgram and are also available on the web site http://www.ctcasl.com.  At this time, all applications must be printed as hard copy, filled out, and submitted by U.S. mail.   The Awards Committee, consisting of volunteers from among the previous year's winners, will notify the winners in September.

 

CASL, Inc. offers these annual awards to recognize outstanding service and outstanding programs by certified school library specialists employed in Connecticut and members of CASL. Use the Nomination/Application Form for these awards:  Carleton W. H. Erickson Award, Hilda and John Jay Award, Rheta Clark Award, CASL Service Award.  Nominations must be received by April 15, 2008 and applications must be completed by June 1, 2008.


Carlton W. H. Erickson Award

 

To honor a person who has made an auspicious beginning in media services at the building level through contributions to the students, faculty, lay citizens, and/or instructional program of the school, school system, educational agency, or institution wherein the nominee/applicant is employed.  The nominee/applicant, although new in the media profession in Connecticut, has been involved in media service for no more than five year.  The nominee/applicant has demonstrated a dedication to the goals and principles of the media profession through action, philosophy, and speech


"Building level personnel" shall be defined as one whose primary responsibility is to work directly with students and faculty in a given school, school system, educational agency, or institution.
"Auspicious" shall be deemed as innovative or beyond normal requirements.
"New" shall be interpreted as recent, in a short space of time, not many years.
"Service" shall be construed as assistance, help, usefulness, and value.
"Dedication" shall be interpreted as adherence, devotion, and loyalty.


The nominee/applicant shall submit two letters of reference, one from a teaching colleague and one from an administrator.  The award recipient will receive a plaque.


Hilda and John Jay Award


To honor a member who has made a significant contribution to the profession through publication of an article or book, implementation of a professional development activity, significant work on a national-level committee, teaching of a graduate-level course for library media teachers, or utilization of a new technology to streamline CASL's operation.


The nominee/applicant has made ANY TWO of the following contributions to the profession during the last three calendar years immediately prior to nomination/application:

  • Developed or successfully implemented a professional development activity for CEU credit relative to library and instructional media topics through the auspices of CASL;
  • Made a significant, verifiable contribution to a national-level committee for ALA or AECT devoted to the interests of library media teachers and programs;
  • Published an article relevant to school library media programs in a nationally circulated professional journal (nominee/applicant may be sole author or co- author);
  • Published a book on a topic relevant to school library media programs or personnel that has been positively reviewed in at least one professional journal (nominee/applicant may be sole author or co-author);
  • Developed a syllabus for, and taught as an adjunct faculty member, a graduate course to prospective library media teachers which develops requisite competencies for the profession;
  • Implemented a new technology to streamline those administrative tasks or data management operations requisite to CASL's effective and efficient operation.

The nominee/applicant shall submit a current resume and two letters of reference, one from a teaching colleague and one from an administrator. The award recipient will receive a plaque.


Rheta A. Clark Award


To honor a member for extensive service (at least 10 years) and outstanding contributions in the library media field to students, faculty, lay citizens, and/or instructional program of the school or school system or educational agency or institution wherein the nominee/applicant is employed. The nominee/applicant has demonstrated through action, philosophy, and speech a dedication to the goals and principles of the media profession. Eligibility for award is not contingent on retirement.

  • Membership lists and other existing data indicate the above.  
  • "Outstanding" shall be construed as superior or of state, regional, or national importance
  • "Contributions" shall be deemed as innovative or beyond normal requirements.  
  • "Extensive" shall be construed as wide, far ranging, over a period of at least 10 years, encompassing many activities and/or projects.
  • "Service" shall be interpreted as assistance, help, usefulness, and value.  
  • "Dedication" shall be interpreted as adherence, devotion, and loyalty.  

The nominee/applicant shall submit a current resume and two letters of reference, one from a teaching colleague and one from an administrator. The award recipient will receive a plaque and have their name inscribed on the CASL plaque of award winners.


CASL Service Award


To honor a person who has made an outstanding contribution to CASL and/or educational media programs. The nominee(s) shall have demonstrated dedication to the profession.

  • "Outstanding" shall be considered as above and beyond the norm.
  • "Dedication" shall be interpreted as adherence, devotion, and loyalty.

The award recipient will receive a plaque.


CASL, Inc. offers the annual Program Award to recognize outstanding programs by certified school library specialists employed in Connecticut and members of CASL.  Use the Program Award Nomination/Application Form due June 1, 2008. Program Award


For outstanding instructional units of study or programs planned and implemented by the library media specialist in the past school year. The program or unit of study may have been in collaboration with colleagues, public librarians, parents, and/or students. The recipient(s) of this award will be expected to present a visual display that documents the project at the Annual Conference. One Program Award recipient will also receive a $500 stipend if selected for the Follett Creativity Award, presented for an especially original and creative program. 

 

The award recipient (s) will receive a plaque.


CASL, Inc. offers this annual award to an administrator for outstanding support for improving school library media programs. Use the Administrator’s Nomination Form. Nominations must be received by April 15, 2008.  Applications must be received by June 1, 2008.  The nominator must be a certified school library media specialist and a member of CASL.

 

CASL Administrator’s Award


To honor an administrator who provides necessary support for improving media services through encouragement and adequate funding for program maintenance and improvement. Traditionally, one award has been given to a building level administrator and another to a district level administrator.


The award recipient (s) will receive a plaque.


CASL, Inc. offers this annual award to a teacher for exceptional collaboration with a library media specialist. Use the Pellerin Classroom Teacher Nomination Form. Nominations must be received by April 15,l 2008.  Applications must be received by June 1, 2008.  The nominator must be a certified library media specialist and a member of CASL.

 

Pellerin Classroom Teacher Award

 

To honor a classroom teacher who participates in the necessary steps to establish an instructional partnership with the library media specialist.

 

The award recipient (s) will receive a plaque.

 


CASL, Inc. offers this annual award to student (s) for creating an exceptional film or video product. View the Film and/or Video Award Description and Rubric. Applications must be received by June 1, 2008.  The nominator must be a certified library media specialist and a member of CASL.

 

Student Film and/or Video Award - Additional Information

 

 To honor students who demonstrate in a film and / or video production a level of information and technology literacy skills that will enable them to:

  • Communicate information and ideas
  • Demonstrate responsible, legal and ethical use of information and technology by acknowledging copyright 
  • Use technology tools to enhance learning,  increase productivity. and promote creativity.

The award recipient (s) will receive an honorarium of  $250 per year donated by Mr. Johnson and Mr. Searle and a plaque.
